In summary, there are two broad types of methods for estimation of LAI, either employing the ��direct�� measures involving destructive sampling, litter fall collection, or point quadrat sampling ��indirect�� methods involving optical instruments and radiative transfer models. The dynamic, rapid and large spatial coverage advantages of remote sensing techniques, which overcome the labor-intensive and time-consuming defect of direct ground-based filed measurement, allow remotely sensed imagery to successfully estimate biophysical and structural information of forest ecosystems.A range of LAI definitions exist in the research literature, which complicates the comparison between works, and thus, the first focus of this paper is a compilation of LAI definitions.

The second focus of the paper is the explanation of the gap fraction method theory. Thirdly, LAI estimation methods and sensors are discussed. Finally, remotely sensed LAI estimation and scaling issues associated with it are discussed.2.?TheoryIn the early period of LAI research, due to the complicated distribution of foliage elements within the canopy, a modified Beer��s law light extinction model was developed. The model estimates LAI by mathematically analyzing light intercepting effect of leaves with different angular distribution based on a very common simplified assumption that all of foliage element and live parts within canopy are randomly distributed. The point quadrat method [45,46] was an early method used to mathematically analyze the relationship between projection area and foliage elements with all possible angular and azimuthal distributions.

In this model, the extinction coefficient served as an important parameter to characterize the effect of leaves�� angular and spatial distributions on radiation interception. An algorithm was developed [47] to calculate extinction coefficients based on the assumption that the angular distribution of leaf area in a canopy is similar to the distribution of area on the surface of prolate and oblate spheroids. Because of the assumption of randomly located foliage elements within canopy, the LAI obtained from gap fraction [48] theory was not the true LAI, thus, a term called effective LAI was created to more accurately describe the result. However, gap fraction theory only applies to the percentage or proportion of gaps accounting for the whole hemispherical bottom-up view of a canopy.

In addition, it has key roles in the biosynthesis of several signalling factors and the regulation of oxidative response genes ]. CPR is transcriptionally regulated by PPARa in mouse and, given the comparable PPARa and CPR expression in Lean salmon fed VO, similar regulation likely occurs in salmon. However, changes in CPR expression can be related to several processes that were affected by FO replacement. Thus, CPR expression could be linked to changes in both cholesterol and LC PUFA biosynthesis, both more marked in Lean fish, although this is unlikely because VO induced up regulation of these pathways. A more likely association is with cell oxi dant metabolism, also suggested by the microarray results as being possibly down regulated in VO fed fish.

In particular, down regulation of HOX in salmon fed VO, more marked for Lean fish correlating with CPR expression, might be an indication of this. Two main approaches have been tried to exploit the complementary properties of visual and inertial sensors, namely the loosely coupled approach and the tightly coupled approach [13]. In the loosely coupled approach [14�C16], the vision-based tracking system and the INS exchange information each other, while the sensor data processing takes place in separate modules. The information delivered by the IMU can be used to speed up the tracking task of the features by predicting their locations within the next frame; in turn, data from the visual sensor allows updating the calibration parameters of inertial sensors. Conversely, in the tightly coupled approach all measurements, either visual or inertial, are combined and processed using a statistical filtering framework.

In particular, Kalman filter-based methods are the preferred tool to perform sensor fusion [2,17,18].In this paper the problem of estimating the ego-motion of a hand-held IMU-camera system is addressed. The presented development stems from our ongoing research on tracking position and orientation of human body segments for applications in telerehabilitation. While orientation tracking can be successfully performed using EKF-based sensor fusion methods based on inertial/magnetic measurements [10,19,20], position tracking requires some form of aiding [21].A tightly coupled approach was adopted to the design of a system in which pose estimates were derived from observations of fiducials.

They were called DLT-based EKF (DLT: Direct Linear Transformation) and error-driven EKF. In each filter 2D frame-to-frame correspondences were established by a process of model-based visual feature tracking: a feature was searched within a size-variable window around its predicted location, based on 3D known coordinates of fiducials and the a priori state estimate delivered by the EKF. Moreover, the visual measurement equations were stacked to the measurement equations for the IMU sensors (accelerometer and magnetic sensor), and paired to the state transition equation, where the state vector included quaternion of rotation, position and velocity of the body frame relative to the navigation frame.

In a conventional lighting system, a light source can be merely switched on/off manually, while, instead in a smart one, various preset lighting modes are preloaded into the lighting system, either wired or wireless, to meet the user’s specific needs. Besides, conventionally, a heavily loaded lighting system necessitates a high-capacity switch, and requires a large volume of cables to drive a distant load. In contrast, a load is directly powered by an output driver, meaning that there is no need to increase the power capacity of a switch when the system is heavily loaded, and it merely requires a long signal line to drive a distant load. Furthermore, a smart lighting system can be made dimmable and controllable by timer means.

On top of that, a lighting system can be made adaptive, such that the indoor brightness can be maintained at a constant level taking into account the contribution of outdoor sunshine. As indicated by statistics, lighting, air conditioning and the rest account for 33%, 50% and 17% of energy consumption, respectively.

In the last decades, the high-intensity sweeteners have increasingly been used by the food and pharmaceutical industries to improve the taste of different products. Despite the long-term usage of artificial high-intensity sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, neotame, acesulfame potassium and sucralose, their safety is still debated and currently European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) is conducting a full re-evaluation process of aspartame under the mandate of the European Commission [1]. Toxicological and clinical studies indicate that an excess of artificial sweeteners induces various health problems such as memory loss, headaches, seizures, cancer, etc. [2�C4]. In consequence, the analysis of sweeteners in foods and pharmaceutical preparations is important for health consumer protection.

Various analytical techniques have been applied in the analysis of natural sugars and artificial sweeteners. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is widely used for the determination of sweeteners [5�C7], but this technique is based on expensive equipment, requires long and complex sample pretreatment, uses toxic organic solvents and various reagents. Different alternative analytical methods based on various detections, such as electrochemical [8�C10], spectrophotometric [11,12], chemiluminescent [13] or colorimetric detection [14,15] have been developed. Even if these techniques require simple equipment, some of them are time-consuming, involve different chemical reagents, or do not have the necessary selectivity for the analyte determination in relevant commercial samples.

(Bio)sensors are interesting analytical devices with good analytical performance for the rapid analysis of complex samples [16,17]. Only few papers describe biosensors for the determination of aspartame in soft drinks. Those biosensors were based on the Cilengitide chemical co-immobilization of enzymes on different electrodes, such as ammonia-gas-sensing electrode [18], platinum-based hydrogen peroxide electrode [19], oxygen electrode [20], or graphite epoxy composite electrode [21]. Another strategy is based on the enzyme immobilization into columns integrated in flow systems: two enzyme columns containing peptidase and aspartate aminotransferase, respectively, immobilized on activated aminopropyl glass beads and an L-glutamate oxidase electrode [22] or another system consisting of a column containing pronase and an L-amino acid oxidase electrode [23]. These biosensors require long analysis times, show a reduced linear range, short lifetimes, or weak detection limits. Thus, fast, inexpensive methods of analysis with improved selectivity and sensitivity are required to monitor sweeteners in an extensive range of different commercial product matrices.

An overview of the detection mechanisms and specific examples are shown in Table 1, respectively. However, it is important to note that this table is not meant to be comprehensive, but simply gives the reader a sense of the breadth of research which has been performed in the field. Each sensor was originally demonstrated off-chip, and gradually migrated to an integrated format, also referred to as a Lab-on-Chip. For example, one of the first optical sensors was based on an optical fiber, in which the change between the input power and output power was used as the detection signal [9]. Later, integrated optical sensors were developed using waveguides, resonators, and other on-chip approaches [10�C16].Table 1.Summary of different sensors, detection mechanism, and examples of detection.

Additional details on each detection modality are found in the subsequent sections.Because of the numerous types of sensors, fundamental metrics were developed for comparing device performance. They are related to the response or behavior of the device. In the present review, we will focus on six of these metrics; however, for the interested Carfilzomib reader there are several articles and textbooks which can provide in-depth discussions on sensor theory [4,138].The key performance metrics include the signal, noise level, signal to noise ratio (SNR), linear range (working range), response time and rate, and false-positive/false-negative rate (selectivity). By assessing the endogenous oxygen status within the siliques of both thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus) it was proposed that oxygen deficiency is an important determinant of the process of seed development. A series of studies followed, in which direct estimates of endogenous oxygen concentrations were made using relatively robust oxygen probes (microoptodes; Presens GmbH Germany). The procedure for oxygen profiling in seeds has since been standardized into the following four steps:The fruit (containing the intact seed) is fixed in a horizontal plane and, if necessary for the access of the microsensor, interfering material of the fruit is removed (e.g.
